HL7 for EMS

Now we're talking - EMS and Hospitals speaking the same language using ZOLL's HL7 EMS Data Exchange

EMS has a greater demand to communicate electronically with their affiliated health care organizations. To meet this need, ZOLL has built a solution that EMS can use to pass their transport data from RescueNet ePCR to hospitals or Health Information Exchange (HIE) in a language they understand - HL7.

How does it Work?

Step 1: The RescueNet ePCR report is created and sent to the ZOLL HL7 EMS Data Exchange

Step 2: The HL7 record is created and can include a PDF of your PCR for use in a Health Information Exchange (HIE) or hospital (or both).

Step 3: The HL7 data from EMS is sent and available automatically to any receiving hospital.

How is ZOLL's HL7 EMS Data Exchange different than other date exchange solutions?

  • ZOLL's solution facilitates communication between EMS and the Hospital or HIE using a common language
  • It is a direct data exchange, no middle man needed
  • Utilizes the latest HL7 standard designed for the EMS industry so there are no language barriers
  • Use of HL7 standards allows EMS to become an integral piece of the larger healthcare system
  • ZOLL is a Health Level 7 (HL7) International Organizational Member; partner of the NEMSIS Technical Assistance Center; lead by Dr. Greg Mears, ZOLL Medical Director and principal investigator for NEMSIS

How does it improve Communication?

  • Electronic transmissions are more secure and reliable
  • No more illegible reports
  • No more missing faxes  (this is a huge win for hospital requirements)

What are the Benefits for the EMS Agency?

  • A low cost HL7 data extract (maintenance applies)
  • Custom HL7 interfaces are VERY expensive and labor intensive.  We have done the work for you.  (minor ePCR configuration changes required)
  • Support, support, support.  We will be right by your side to ensure the successful outcome of this project

What are the Benefits for The Hospital/Healthcare facility?

  • Receive standardized HL7 data (Version 3 CDA) from EMS agencies delivering patients to the facility
  • Ability to attach PDF of the EMS care report to the patient's medical record
  • Provide discrete demographic and clinical data to populate fields in the EMR system if desired
  • Turn a manual process into an automated electronic process (no more physically scanning and attaching EMS records to your EMR)
  • Reinforce strong and collaborative relationships with the EMS systems delivering patients to the facility
  • Provide continuity of care
  • Help EMS improve their care protocols and effectiveness by providing data to them about patients they previously transported (later phases of project)
