  • Chart Smarter: Why One EMS Agency Ditched Paper for Mobile Tech

Clock face icon 1 minute read

One data-driven EMS agency shares how mobile technology improved charting accuracy, boosted crew job satisfaction, and helped them achieve key goals.

    Was this information valuable?

Historically, JFK University Medical Center EMS (JFK EMS) crews often used paper charts with notes that could sometimes be left behind in vehicles. This environment, especially with a high frequency of calls, resulted in the loss of key patient or clinical data, and crews had to spend a substantial amount of time back at the station tracking down this information to make up for lost work.

A self-described data-driven department, JFK EMS frequently conducts quality assurance/quality improvement (QA/QI) reviews and saw that their charting method hindered crew performance. The team sought a faster, more convenient, and secure way to chart. Since then, they’ve successfully implemented a contemporaneous charting strategy built on mobile technology.

ZOLL visited JFK EMS at their New Jersey headquarters to discuss their contemporaneous charting strategy and rollout plan with Clinical Manager, Jeff McBride, and his team. During the roundtable discussion, Jeff explained how their mobile strategy transformed charting workflows into a more intuitive process that includes starting, locking, and even submitting charts while on scene.

Readers can view the roundtable discussion recording on-demand to learn how JFK EMS:

    • Adopted mobile technology to improve chart accuracy, save time, and streamline workflows
    • Used key mobile app features to start and complete charts compliantly in the field
    • Improved QA/QI processes through efficient case reviews and data interoperability between monitors and charts
    • Implemented best practices for rolling out the technology and introducing it to team members
